HELPING CHILDREN LEARN is an after-school program designed to help advance refugee children's social and academic skill. The children are identified by teachers at Kennedy Elementary School as those who would benefit from a positive and fun learning environment. The twenty-seven children, grades, 1st through 5th, represent the cultures of Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, Bosnia, and Mexico.

After arrival by school bus at 3:10pm each day, the children engage in physical activity such as jumping rope.  Afterwards they eat a nutritious snack, brush their teeth, engage in a skill building activity, do homework, and finish up with free play time.  At the close of each evening, the CHARISM van brings the children directly to their homes by 5:30pm.

FACES PROGRAMA basic skills and learning program designed to improve literacy and writing skills among underprivileged youth.  Participants explore avenues of self-expression through poetry, creative writing, and public speaking.

Each year a different focus of personal self-expression is selected, with a professional from the community leading and guiding youth through the process.  CHARISM has also partnered with FirstChoice Clinic, to educate participants on the importance of making healthy choices.  Together, the two components of the program help build character, leadership, and self-confidence.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA: Held once a week at CHARISM's McCormick Park Family Center, boys from this neighborhood have the opportunity to engage in activities that build critical skills for success.

The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through nearly a century of experience, knows — that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.
