Youth Outreach

CHARISM offers a caring and nurturing environment for youth of both our McCormick Park and Stonebridge neighborhoods. For many of the programs at CHARISM, literacy and positive social interactions are a focal point. We are currently partnering with the Fargo Public Schools to bring our youth the kinds of enrichment activities necessary to build long-term growth and success.

  Ongoing Youth Programs Include:

HELPING CHILDREN LEARN is an after-school program designed to help advance refugee children's social and academic skill. The children are identified by teachers at Kennedy Elementary School as those who would benefit from a positive and fun learning environment. The twenty-seven children, grades, 1st through 5th, represent the cultures of Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, Bosnia, and Mexico.

After arrival by school bus at 3:10pm each day, the children engage in physical activity such as jumping rope.  Afterwards they eat a nutritious snack, brush their teeth, engage in a skill building activity, do homework, and finish up with free play time.  At the close of each evening, the CHARISM van brings the children directly to their homes by 5:30pm.

GIVING YOUTH A VOICE:  Focus on Photography educates youth about photography and photojournalism under the guidance of a professional photographer. Youth from the Stonebridge area in Fargo learn basic photography skills through a hands-on program that allows participants to experiment with both documentary and photojournalism styles of photography.

Participants also learn about image-making such as framing and other techniques. Digital editing, cropping and toning skills are also achieved using Adobe Photoshop. Completed projects from the Fall 2006 session are currently on display at the Starbucks Coffeehouse on University in Fargo, North Dakota.

CHARISM SUMMER CAMP A collaborative program with the Fargo Park District.  CHARISM Summer Camp is an annual event held at both the McCormick Park and South Site locations.  Children are served breakfast and lunch each day and are engaged in fun and educational activities.  Off site activities include day trips to the zoo, the city swimming pool, and local parks for picnics.
