Helping children and families gain power over poverty since 1994
CHARISM Neighborhood Support Centers is a non-profit, neighborhood-based organization that seeks to provide outreach programs for low-income children and families located in Fargo, ND. We connect people to essential services such as supplemental food programs and after-school enrichment and support for youth, as well as provide opportunities for community through neighborhood and holiday events.
CHARISM was founded in 1994 by five area churches and Community Homes, a subsidized housing complex located near McCormick Park, to provide programming to low-income families in the neighborhood. As refugees began settling in the McCormick Park neighborhood during the mid- to late-1990s, community needs shifted and CHARISM offered programs to serve New Americans as well, such as English Language Learner (ELL), sewing, and computer classes.
Over time, CHARISM was approached by the City of Fargo Planning Office to offer similar programs in another Fargo neighborhood in need. In August 2004, CHARISM opened the doors of the Stonebridge location to serve the cultural pockets of poverty in this South Fargo neighborhood as well. This location also includes a “Multicultural Hub” where New American businesses may affordably lease space and use common areas for events.
Part of what makes CHARISM unique is its neighborhood-based approach – our offices and services are purposely located within walking distance of our clients. This allows us to be a part of the community and responsive to community needs, but moreover, because many low-income individuals and families struggle with barriers to transportation, we make our services available to them in their own "backyard."
Also making CHARISM special is our approach to youth. We do not simply offer a place for children to be after school or during the summer, but we provide important programming for them as well. Reaching children ages 6-16, our mentors and staff provide an educational difference to students, working on homework and literacy, but also model social skills, show children how to trust, promote positive decision-making, and provide a safe place to form relationships.
CHARISM realizes that making a difference in the lives of the people we serve is a community effort. We partner and work closely with others in order to create the biggest impact. These collaborative efforts have led us to work closely with the Fargo Public Schools, the Fargo Park District, the Fargo Police Department, colleges, churches, and numerous other organizations in Fargo. It also means that we need to work with individuals like you to make a difference. We invite you to explore our website and learn more about CHARISM, what it offers the community, and how you can become involved.
